When a commercial or industrial building demands the maximum possible corrosion resistance from its roofing system — and where the unpainted metallic finish is acceptable or preferred — Zincalume steel is the specification of choice across NSW, ACT and Queensland.

Zincalume is manufactured by BlueScope Steel using a zinc-aluminium-magnesium alloy coating applied to a high-tensile steel base. This alloy coating provides significantly greater corrosion resistance than traditional galvanised (zinc-only) coatings — BlueScope's testing data demonstrates that Zincalume outlasts galvanised steel by a factor of four times or more in typical Australian environments. In demanding industrial environments — coastal, chemical, high-humidity or high-temperature applications — this performance advantage is even more pronounced.

A D Roofing has extensive experience specifying, supplying and installing Zincalume roofing on commercial and industrial buildings across NSW, ACT and Queensland. Our licensed roof plumbers deliver professional Zincalume installation on projects of all scales, from small commercial buildings to large industrial facilities spanning tens of thousands of square metres.

Our teams service Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong, Canberra, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Call 0434 058 186 for a free Zincalume roofing quote.

    What Is Zincalume Steel?

Zincalume is BlueScope Steel's branded zinc-aluminium-magnesium alloy coated steel product. The coating composition — aluminium, zinc and a small addition of magnesium — provides a combination of barrier protection and sacrificial galvanic protection that is superior to either zinc-only (galvanised) or aluminium-only coatings.

Key performance characteristics of Zincalume include:

Outstanding corrosion resistance. The aluminium component of the Zincalume coating forms a stable oxide layer on the steel surface that acts as a barrier against corrosive elements. The zinc component provides sacrificial galvanic protection at cut edges and scratches. Together, these mechanisms give Zincalume its exceptional corrosion resistance across a wide range of Australian environments.

High heat reflectivity. The unpainted metallic surface of Zincalume reflects a high proportion of solar radiation, reducing roof surface temperatures and the thermal load on the building below. For industrial buildings with heat-sensitive contents or operations, this is a meaningful practical benefit.

Long service life. Correctly installed Zincalume roofing in an inland Australian environment has a service life well in excess of 40 years. Even in coastal and industrial environments — where corrosion rates are higher — Zincalume significantly outperforms galvanised alternatives.

Recyclability. Zincalume steel is fully recyclable at end of service life, making it the preferred choice for commercial and industrial clients with sustainability reporting obligations.

Where Zincalume Roofing Is Most Appropriate

Zincalume is particularly well-suited to the following commercial and industrial applications:

Industrial warehouses and factories where corrosion resistance and longevity are the primary performance requirements, and where the metallic appearance of the unpainted product is acceptable.

Agricultural and rural buildings where the roof is exposed to chemical fertilisers, animal waste gases and high humidity — all of which accelerate corrosion on roofing materials with lower corrosion resistance.

Food processing and cool storage facilities where moisture levels are persistently high and hygiene requirements rule out painted surfaces in certain areas.

Mining and resources sector buildings where exposure to corrosive airborne chemicals, dust and moisture creates demanding conditions for roofing materials.

Buildings being re-roofed on a budget where Zincalume's lower cost relative to pre-painted Colorbond is a significant consideration and where the unpainted appearance is acceptable.

Where appearance is important and colour selection is required, Colorbond — which uses Zincalume as its base steel — is the appropriate specification. A D Roofing advises on Zincalume vs Colorbond during the quotation process for every project.

The A D Roofing Zincalume Roofing Process

    1. Site Assessment and Specification

We assess your building's structural configuration, roof pitch, exposure environment and operational requirements to confirm whether Zincalume is the most appropriate roofing specification. We advise on the most appropriate Zincalume profile for the building application and provide a written quote covering the complete installation scope.

    2. Material Procurement

We source all Zincalume roofing materials directly from BlueScope-authorised distributors, ensuring all products are genuine BlueScope Zincalume — not substitute or lower-specification alternatives. For large industrial roofing projects, long-run sheeting is fabricated to the required lengths, minimising end laps.

    3. Safety Planning and Installation

All required safety documentation is prepared before mobilisation. Our licensed team installs the Zincalume roofing system in strict accordance with BlueScope's installation requirements and Australian Standards, including all fixings, laps, flashings, gutters and downpipes.

    4. Completion and Documentation

You receive a completion report, photographic documentation and our written workmanship guarantee on all Zincalume roofing works.

What is the difference between Zincalume and galvanised roofing?

Both are coated steel roofing products, but the coating composition is different. Galvanised steel uses a zinc-only coating. Zincalume uses a zinc-aluminium-magnesium alloy coating that provides significantly better corrosion resistance — BlueScope's testing shows Zincalume outlasts galvanised steel by four times or more in typical Australian environments.

    Can Zincalume be painted?

Yes. Zincalume can be painted after installation using appropriate primers and topcoats designed for use on zinc-aluminium coated steel. If colour is required from the outset, Colorbond — which uses Zincalume as its base — is the more economical and durable option.

Is Zincalume suitable for coastal environments?

Standard Zincalume performs well in most environments, but for severe coastal applications — within 100 metres of surf beach or within 500 metres of calm saltwater — BlueScope's Colorbond Ultra, which uses an enhanced ZINCALUME Ultra base coating, is the recommended specification.
