Natural light in a commercial or industrial building is not a luxury — it is a productivity and energy efficiency imperative. Decades of research have established the link between natural light in the workplace and worker productivity, wellbeing and retention. In industrial environments, adequate natural lighting from skylights reduces the reliance on artificial lighting — lowering energy costs significantly on buildings where lighting runs 10, 12 or more hours per day.

For warehouses, factories, manufacturing plants and large commercial buildings across NSW, ACT and Queensland, correctly designed and installed skylights are one of the most cost-effective building improvements available — reducing energy costs, improving the working environment and adding long-term value to the building asset.

A D Roofing installs commercial and industrial skylights and translucent roof panels across NSW, ACT and Queensland, both as part of new roofing installations and as standalone skylight replacement programs on existing commercial and industrial roofs.

Our teams operate across Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong, Canberra, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Call 0434 058 186 for a free skylight installation quote.

Types of Commercial Skylights We Install

    Polycarbonate Translucent Roof Panels

The most common form of natural lighting on commercial and industrial metal roofs. Polycarbonate translucent panels are installed in the same profile as the surrounding metal roofing — corrugated, Trimdek, Klip-Lok — replacing opaque steel sheets with UV-stable translucent panels that allow natural light into the building below.

Modern polycarbonate panels offer significantly better performance than the fibreglass or acrylic panels they replaced on older industrial buildings — they are UV-stabilised to resist yellowing and embrittlement, have better light diffusion characteristics that reduce glare, and are available with thermal and solar control coatings that reduce heat gain on the building interior.

    Continuous Barrel Vault Skylights

Continuous barrel vault skylights run the full length of a building bay, providing consistent natural light levels across a large floor area. They are commonly specified on warehouses and manufacturing facilities where consistent, shadow-free lighting across the work floor is required.

Ridge Skylights and Ridge Ventilation Systems

Ridge skylights are installed at the apex of a commercial or industrial roof, providing natural light and, where ventilation openings are incorporated, passive hot air exhaust from the building interior. Combined light-and-ventilation ridge units are a cost-effective solution for industrial buildings where both daylighting and ventilation are required.

    Dome Skylights

Dome skylights — individual circular or square units installed at regular intervals across a commercial or industrial roof — are an alternative to strip translucent panels for buildings where point-source lighting is appropriate. They are commonly used on large retail and warehouse buildings.

    Fibreglass Panel Replacement

Many older commercial and industrial buildings in NSW, ACT and Queensland have fibreglass translucent roof panels that were installed decades ago and are now severely degraded — yellowed, brittle, cracked and providing minimal light transmission while representing a significant weatherproofing risk. A D Roofing replaces deteriorated fibreglass panels with modern polycarbonate alternatives as part of our skylight replacement service.

    Benefits of Commercial Skylight Installation

Reduced energy costs. Replacing artificial lighting with natural light during daylight hours reduces energy consumption significantly. For a typical warehouse operating 8–10 hours per day, adequate skylight coverage can reduce lighting energy costs by 50–70%.

Improved worker productivity and wellbeing. Natural light exposure during the working day has documented benefits for worker alertness, mood, circadian rhythm regulation and overall wellbeing. In industrial environments where shift workers spend long hours in artificial lighting, skylight installation can contribute to measurable productivity improvements.

Reduced heat load on summer days. Modern polycarbonate translucent panels with solar control coatings allow natural light into the building while rejecting a significant proportion of the solar heat that would otherwise be admitted through clear glazing or standard translucent panels.

Compliance with building codes. The National Construction Code requires minimum levels of natural light in commercial buildings where occupied on a regular basis. Skylight installation may be required as part of a commercial building upgrade or change of use.

Asset value improvement. Commercial and industrial buildings with adequate natural lighting are more attractive to tenants and achieve better rental rates than poorly lit equivalent buildings.

The A D Roofing Skylight Installation Process

    1. Assessment and Design

We assess your building's roof geometry, structural layout, existing lighting levels and natural light requirements to determine the most appropriate type, size and distribution of skylights. For large industrial buildings, we work with lighting designers or use industry-standard daylight modelling to specify skylight coverage that achieves the target light levels.

    2. Written Quote

You receive a written quote covering skylight supply, installation, all associated flashing and weatherproofing works, and any structural modifications required.

    3. Safety Planning

All skylight installation work involves working at height on commercial and industrial roofs. A D Roofing prepares comprehensive safety documentation before mobilisation and implements all required fall protection measures on site.

    4. Installation

Our licensed roof plumbers install the skylight system in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications and relevant Australian Standards. All flashings and weatherproofing details around skylights are completed to the highest standard — skylight-to-roof junctions are one of the most common sources of commercial roof leaks and A D Roofing treats every junction with the care it demands.

    5. Quality Inspection and Handover

On completion we inspect all installed skylights and associated flashings, including a water test where practicable. You receive photographic documentation and our written workmanship guarantee.

Skylight Replacement — Older Commercial Buildings

Roofer kneeling with a drill while a crewmate checks the sheet lineAD Roofing job

Many commercial and industrial buildings across NSW, ACT and Queensland were constructed with fibreglass translucent panels that are now well past their useful service life. Degraded fibreglass panels:

    • Provide minimal natural light due to yellowing and surface degradation
    • Are structurally brittle and can crack or shatter under foot traffic or hail impact — creating a serious safety risk
    • Allow water ingress at failed laps and cracked sections
    • Create heat gain on the building interior due to loss of their original solar control properties

A D Roofing replaces degraded fibreglass panels with modern polycarbonate alternatives, restoring natural light levels, eliminating the structural risk of brittle panels, and improving the building's thermal performance. Replacement is carried out with the building in operation in most cases, with temporary weatherproofing installed as each section is opened.

    Still have a question?

    0434 058 186
How much natural light can skylights provide?

This depends on the skylight type, coverage percentage and the building's internal geometry. As a general guide, translucent panel coverage of 5–10% of the roof area provides adequate natural light for most warehouse and industrial applications during daylight hours.

Do skylights cause excessive heat gain in summer?

Standard translucent panels do admit solar heat as well as light. Modern polycarbonate panels with thermal and solar control coatings significantly reduce heat gain relative to older fibreglass or standard polycarbonate products. We advise on the most appropriate panel specification for your building's climate and orientation.

Can skylights be installed on an existing commercial roof without replacing the whole roof?

Yes. A D Roofing installs skylights on existing commercial and industrial roofs as standalone projects — cutting out sections of existing metal sheeting and installing translucent panels in their place. The surrounding sheeting and flashings are detailed to ensure a fully weathertight junction.

Do you replace fibreglass skylights on older industrial buildings?

Yes. Fibreglass skylight panel replacement is a significant part of our work on older commercial and industrial buildings across NSW, ACT and Queensland. We replace deteriorated fibreglass with modern UV-stable polycarbonate panels, matched to the existing roof profile.
